Dear Saint Helena Elementary School Families,
My holiday spirit was kicked into high gear on Tuesday evening as I enjoyed the winter performance by the 4/5th grade band. We had nearly all 56 band students on stage, many dressed with holiday flair. Students were a bit nervous before the performance. For 49 students, this was their first band performance after beginning instrumental practice at school approximately 12 weeks ago. All students maintained impressive poise and collective group effort throughout the performance which included traditional children’s songs in addition to holiday tunes. Most songs included solo in addition to whole group sections and many even included student and some audience sing-a-long portions.
Studies show that working to play musical instruments is an excellent way to activate more complex thought processes, mathematical reasoning and, when played with others, the ability to work cooperatively to have individual music and dynamics sync with fellow musicians. I am impressed with all of the practice and effort that went into making this week’s performance a success and I am already looking forward to the Spring Concert!
The last Friday before holiday break will be a Pajama/Cozy Reading Spirit Day. Students will sing holiday songs and will read as a whole school in the morning. If classrooms choose to include food or drinks in holiday celebrations, there are two important things to remember 1) any edible items need to be prepared in a commercial kitchen (this essentially means they need to be purchased at a store, bakery or restaurant as opposed to made in a home kitchen) 2) our district-wide board wellness policy indicates that food and drink items need to adhere to healthy nutritional guidelines and that there can only be one non-healthy item per party. Healthy options include foods such as popcorn, fruits and veggies. Please let your classroom teacher know if you are planning to send anything in that is more “sugary” so that the teacher can make sure that there is only one less healthy item per party. Thank you in advance for helping us be mindful of our students’ collective health and wellness!
