April 2 - 6

2.  Period 2    Vocabulary List 13 (words 181 - 195).  Word + complete definition + origin + use in a sophisticated sentence.   Test Thursday, 4/5.

3.  This week we will conclude our study of the Response to Literature Essay with two stories:  "Dragon, Dragon" and "The All-American Slurp."  We are using class time to read the stories and write the essays.  If make-up work is needed due to absence, students may use their copy of the orange Prentice Hall Literature  book at home.




March 26 - 30
1.  Periods 1-4-7     Spelling Unit 27:  15 vocabulary words + HW pages 169, 170, 173.  Test on Friday 3/30.
 
2.  Period 2     Vocabulary List 12 (words 166 - 180).  Word + complete definition + origin + use in a sophisticated sentence.  Test Friday 3/30.
 
3.  This week we will continue to work on the parts of the Response to Literature essay (summary, theme, personal connection). If make-up work is needed due to absence, students may use their copy of the orange Prentice Hall Literature  book at home.





March 12 - 16

1. Foreign Words Dictionary to be completed by Wednesday, March 14.  Also, hand in Foreign Words worksheet.  Test Wed 3/14.
2.  Introduction to Response to Literature essay style on Thursday, 3/15.
3.  BENCHMARK II on Friday, 3/16.  Students will be given review sheets in class.

4.  No spelling or vocabulary this week!



March 5 - March 9

1.  Period 1-4-7   Spelling Unit 26:  15 vocabulary words + HW pages 163, 164, 167.  Test on FRIDAY 3/9.
 
2.  Period 2   Advanced English:  Spelling / Vocabulary List 11 (# 151 - 165). Test on FRIDAY  3/9.  Definitions for each + a sophisticated sentence for each word.
 
3.  Beginning TUESDAY 3/6 all classes will start the "Foreign Words Dictionary" project. The due date for this is MONDAY 3/12.  This in an in-class project, with resource materials available in the classroom.  Students will create their own dictionary of foreign words used in English.  They should provide a definition, use the word in a sentence, and include a colorful illustration for each of the 30 words they select from the master list.
 
4.  The English 6 BENCHMARK 2 will be FRIDAY 3/16.




February 13 - February 16

1.  Period 1-4-7  Spelling Unit 25:  15 vocabulary words + HW pages 157, 158, 161.  Test on THURSDAY, 2/16.

2.  Period 2   Spelling / Vocabulary List 10 (#136 - 150).  Definitions for each + a sophisticated sentence for each word.  Test on THURSDAY, 2/16.

3.  Maroo of the Winter Caves  book report is due TUESDAY, 2/14.


4.  On WEDNESDAY, 2/15 three things are happening:  1) hand in Lit Terms Group 3 packet;      2) Lit Terms Group 3 flashcards will be counted (12 cards);      3) TEST on Lit Terms Group 3.

5.  On Thursday after the spelling test we will begin looking at PERSUASIVE ESSAYS and how they are structured.  More practice and details to come!





January 30 - February 3
1.  PERIOD 1-4-7:  Spelling Unit 22-- 15 vocabulary words + HW pages 139, 140, 143.  Test on Friday.
 
2.  PERIOD 2:  Vocabulary List 8.  All definitions + sentences.  Test on Friday.
 
3.  Wednesday - Thursday class time will be spent working on several elements of the book report on Maroo of the Winter Caves.   DUE DATE: TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 14
 


January 23 - January 27
 
 
 
1.  Period 1-4-7 Spelling Unit 21:  15 Vocabulary words + definitions.  HW pages 133, 134, 137. Test on Friday.
 
2.  Period 2 Vocabulary List 7 (# 91 - 105).  Test on Friday.
 
3.  Finish Maroo of the Winter Caves  and fill out rest of notes. Begin working on book report (due date TBA).
 
4.  WEDNESDAY is a teacher collaboration day (1/2 day for students). We will be working on Student-Led Conference packets in class.
 
5. THURSDAY: class time in Computer Lab to take book quizzes.  Last day to pass a quiz for Q-2 is Friday 1/27.
 
6.  Friday, January 27 is the LAST DAY OF THE QUARTER.  All assignments and make-up work must be turned in by the end of the day!
 
 

January 17 - January 20

1. NO SCHOOL MONDAY, JAN. 16.  MLK Holiday.
 
2. NO spelling or vocabulary assignments this week.  We will focus on finishing our book and taking notes.
 
3.  All classes will be reading Maroo of the Winter Caves  and taking notes.  As we near the end of the book, we will begin to prepare for writing the book report.

November 28 - December 2

3.  Tues - Wed - Thurs:  Set up notes for Maroo of the Winter Caves.  Students will need 12 pieces of binder paper for the initial set-up. We will spend several weeks reading the book TOGETHER in CLASS, taking notes, and preparing for a detailed book report.  Students will be able to take a quiz on the book when we are done.
November 21 - November 22
This is a short week, with only two days!  English 6 classes are analyzing several types of applications -- bank account, work, little league, college -- to see what kinds of details they include.  Then we are answering questions about the applications themselves.
 
NO HOMEWORK this week!


November 14 - November 18
 
WEDNESDAY 11/16 is a  MINIMUM DAY
 
1.  Spelling (period 1-4-7):  Unit 15 VOCABULARY (15 words + dictionaary definitions);  HW pages 97, 98, 101. Test on Friday 11/18.
 
2.  Spelling for Period 2, Advanced English:   Supplementary Vocabulary List 2.  Part of speech, origin, definition, use in a sophisticated sentence. Test on Friday 11/18.
 
3.  Benchmark 1 exam is Tuesday, Nov 15.  Review sheets were given out 11/10.  Students should study the review items.  Test is 20 multiple choice questions and covers all concepts taught since the first week of school.
 
4. Literary Terms Group 2 TEST on Thursday, Nov. 17.  Flashcards due same day.
 
5.  DOL entry every day.



November 7 - November 11

NO SCHOOL ON FRIDAY, NOV. 11

1.  *Spelling Unit 14:  15 Vocabulary words + complete dictionary definitions.  HW pages 91, 92, 95.  Test on THURSDAY, all vocabulary + HW pages due.
 
2. Literary Terms, Group 2.  Students will receive a packet in class and work with the teacher to fill it out (Tues - Wed).  TEST on Thursday, Nov. 17. 
 
3.  Review for Benchmark Exam #1.  Students will get a review sheet showing them what to review for the Bench 1 exam (exam is Tues., Nov. 15).
 
*NOTE:  Students in Advanced English will begin a different routine for spelling this week. They will not be using the spelling book, but will be given a different word list and asked to define 15 specified words, use them in a sentence, and prepare for a spelling test at the end of the week. This will be our practice for the remainder of the school year.
 







October 31 - November 4

1.  Spelling Unit 13:  15 Vocabulary words + complete dictionary definitions.  HW pages 85, 86, 89.  Test on Friday, all vocabulary + HW pages due.
 
2.  Daily Oral Language entry for each day.  If you miss a day, please come in a few minutes early before school to make up your entry.
 
3.  Elements of Literature:  Continue to read "Cinderella" and take notes on the pink handout.  Follow teacher instructions for notes and Plot Mountain (on back of pink page). Quiz will be on Thursday IF WE FINISH reading, notes, etc. 
 








October 24-28
THERE IS A DAILY ORAL LANGUAGE LOG ENTRY AT THE BEGINNING OF EVERY CLASS.  IF YOU MISS A DAY, YOU WILL NEED TO COME IN EARLY-- BEFORE SCHOOL-- AND MAKE IT UP (when you return to school).  THERE IS NO WAY TO MAKE THIS UP FROM HOME.
 
1. Spelling Unit 11:  15 vocabulary words + dictionary definitions.  HW pages 73, 74, 77. Test on Friday + all HW pages due.
 
2. Read Bull Rider  and keep a journal (all in class).  Hand in journal on Tuesday.
 
3. Introduction to "Elements of Literature."  Read "Cinderella" together in class and take notes on literary elements. Hand in notes when we are done with the story, then take the quiz (probably next week).
 
4. Daily Oral Language Log due on Friday.
 
 

October 17-21
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 21 IS THE LAST DAY OF THE QUARTER . . . LAST DAY TO TAKE A BOOK QUIZ FOR INDEPENDENT READING!!

THIS WEEK:

1. Spelling Unit 10:  15 Vocabulary words + dictionary definitions
   HW Pages: 67, 68, 71.   TEST on Friday.
2. TUESDAY:  Literary Terms, Group 1 Flashcards due + TEST on these words.  Must    spell them correctly for credit!
3. Keep a journal on the book Bull Rider  as we read together in class.
4. Hall passes that have not been used will be collected on Friday for 5 pts extra credit EACH.
 
 
 


October 10 - 14

 Literary Terms, Group 1:  Fill out packet in class.  Then make flashcards.  Use flashcards to study for the test.
