SCHOLARSHIPS/FINANCIAL AID 2012–2013

The local scholarship update is due to Ms. Meineke by Friday, April 12, 2013.

A student becomes eligible for financial aid when a family's ability to pay is exceeded by the costs at the school the student plans to attend.  A family's ability to pay is determined by federally mandated eligibility analysis standards.  Factors considered include the family's size, income, assets, parents' age, number of family members in college and unusual circumstances.

§  Napa County 4-H Council Scholarships

These scholarships are for all active 4-H members graduating from high school within Napa County who are interested in furthering their education, whether at a Trade School, University, State College or Community College.  All majors are encouraged to apply.

§  CAA/ESA Youth Scholarship Program

The CAA/ESA Youth Scholarship Program offers this scholarship to a graduating senior who is the child of active duty law enforcement or fire service personnel in the State of California based on academic achievement, community service, extra-curricular activities, and an essay discussing the important role that law enforcement and fire service personnel play in the community.

§  Napa Engineer’s Society – Adrianne Insogna Memorial Scholarship

The Napa Engineer’s Society awards this scholarship in the name of Adrianne Insogna to a senior who plans to major in engineering at a four-year school, has a minimum GPA of 3.0, has demonstrated service to school and community, and has financial need.  Application is available at http://napaengineerssociety.org.

§  Tom Gates Memorial Beef Scholarship

Graduating seniors enrolling as full-time college students for the 2013-2014 school year to pursue a career in an agriculture-related field who currently have significant hands on experience in the beef industry via fair exhibits, employment, or other experience are eligible to apply.  Selection is based on academic achievement, career goals, extra-curricular activities, including junior beef projects, demonstrated leadership skills, and commitment to agriculture.  All candidates will also be considered for a $300 scholarship from the Napa Solano Cattlewomen’s Assn.

§  Yountville FOCUS (Friends of our Community United in Service) Scholarship

Graduating seniors who attended Yountville Elementary School and resided within such boundaries for a minimum of one year are eligible to apply for this Scholarship.

§  Aldo Delfino Scholarship

This scholarship is designed to reward a student with a desire to enter a career in agriculture.  Scholarships are awarded based on leadership, demonstrated commitment to the industry and financial need.

§  Northern California Golf Association (NCGA) Foundation Scholarships

The NCGA Foundation presents the Diane and Paul Morton Scholarship, the Geraldine Elizabeth House Scholarship, the Goldman Family Scholarship, and the Youth on Course Scholarship based on merit and financial need to deserving seniors who are Youth on Course members with a minimum GPA of 3.0 that will be attending a four-year college or university.  To become a Youth on Course member, register at http://youthoncourse.org.  The scholarships’ applications are available at http://ncgafoundation.org/grants/scholarships.

§  Shannon Nicole Lemieux Memorial Aquatics Scholarship

Swimmers, divers and water polo athletes who have participated for three years in their sport and have achieved a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 are eligible to apply.

§  The George and Gwendolyn Goodin Scholarship Fund

The George and Gwendolyn Goodin Endowment Fund provides one-year college and university scholarships to Napa County residents who are military veterans, or Napa County residents who are dependents of military veterans that died while in active service.

§  Napa County RCD Directors’ Environmental Conservation Scholarship

This $500 scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior who plans to pursue a career in the field of natural resources management or other related environmental fields.  Applications are available from Ms. Meineke.

§  California Wine Grape Growers Foundation

This scholarship provides financial assistance to the children of California vineyard employees.  Applicants may study the subject of their choice at any campus within the University of California system, California State University system, or California Community College system.  Recipients of four-year scholarships receive $8,000, and recipients of two-year scholarships receive $2,000.  Additional information in English and Spanish on this scholarship and the Robert Miller Scholarship for Viticulture and Enology can be found at www.cwggf.org.

§  Music in the Vineyards 2013 Merit Award Scholarship

This merit scholarship of up to $1,200 is awarded to graduating seniors who have shown exceptional talent as an instrumentalist or pianist, and who intended to develop that talent beyond high school.  The scholarship is given to further the recipients' musical education at the college level. Criteria awards is available on the Music in the Vineyards website at www.musicinthevineyards.org.  Recipients do not have to commit to majoring in music in college.  They must simply plan on continuing their musical studies.  All applications must be mailed with teacher recommendations and a sample.  Winners will be notified in May through high school awards ceremonies.

§  Sons of Italy Lodge Scholarship

Students of Italian ancestry who plan on attending a 2 or 4-year college are eligible for these scholarships offered by the local Sons of Italy chapter.

§  Pope Valley Scholarship Fund

This award is given in honor of Joan Burns and Norman K. Blanchard to seniors who are residents of Pope Valley or graduates of Pope Valley School and plan to further their education.

§  A Voice Found, Inc.

§  SHHS Class of 1968 Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 1986 by the members of the SHHS Class of 1968 in memory of deceased classmates.  The recipients are selected based upon grade point average, participation in athletics and other school activities, extra-curricular volunteer work, and an essay.  The short essay should include future college plans and educational goals, how applicant plans to pay for college, and history of work experience to finance college.

§  Soroptimist International of St. Helena Scholarship

The St. Helena Soroptimists offer these scholarships to students who plan to continue their education at an approved institution of higher learning.  Community service and citizenship are important qualifications for this award.

§  St. Helena Rotary Scholarship in Honor of Roger Adams

High-achieving seniors are selected for this award based on their academic record and an essay on a relevant topic.  Essay topic is still to be determined.

§  Vietnam Veterans Group of San Quentin (VVGSQ) Scholarships

The VVGSQ presents the Scholastic Scholarship and the Mary Manley Inspirational Scholarship to deserving seniors who have a parent or legal guardian who is currently serving in or is Honorably Discharged from the Armed Forces.  Selection is based on a 250-words or more essay describing “what effect my parent’s military service has had on my life,” parent’s military background, GPA, future goals, community service, and any character-reference letters written on your behalf.

These awards, made in the name of Betty Wood, is available to students who have displayed good citizenship, service to school and community and who plan to pursue a technical career at a two or four-year college.

§  Bill Ashby Memorial Scholarship

Established in 1987 by Sutter Home Winery in memory of former employee Bill Ashby, this award is intended to aid a student pursuing further vocational training at a trade school or junior college.

The Federated Women of Upper Napa Valley awards these cash prizes to students who have excelled in the field of art, music (vocal and instrumental), agriculture, and technology.  The winners are selected by the high school faculty.

Friends and family of Terri Strange established this award in February 2004.  Terri was the SHUSD Financial Manager and a big supporter of SHHS students.  Recipients are chosen based on grades, character, leadership, community service, financial need, and future plans.

Timothy W. Hall was the youngest son of Laddie and Ted Hall who died suddenly in 1996.  Family and friends helped establish this foundation to award scholarships to students actively participating in the SHHS Ag Program.
