1. Recognition of Retiring Employees and Dr. Julie Synyard
Upcoming retirees were recognized and honored at last night’s Board Meeting for their many years of service they have given to SHUSD. Ann Sorenson, Ann Rist, Marie Wights, and Carol Shirmang, who will all be retiring at the end of this school year, received lovely clocks that were engraved with their name and years of service.
Dr. Julie Synyard was also recognized and honored for her many years of dedicated service to the District. Julie expressed her heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the District, the Staff, the Students, and the Community, stating her years at SHUSD were wonderful.
 
2. SHHS Drama
Stars of the SHHS play LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS were recognized by the Board for the fine work they did in putting on such a successful play. Drama Instructor Patti Coyle presented a slide show of some of the scenes of the play and commended her students on their great effort. Ms. Coyle also thanked the Elementary School for allowing them to use their auditorium.

REVISED: (1) Added Carol Shirmang to retiree names as she will be retiring at the end of this school year, too. Carol also received a clock at last night’s meeting. So sorry for the oversight, Carol.

3. SHES Garbology
Five very enthusiastic students from the 5th Grade at St. Helena Elementary School made an informative presentation to the Board about food waste and garbage at SHES. Under the direction of Ms. Linda Maloney, the 5th Graders have done several studies on food waste and the resulting amount of garbage created at the school in a single day. In one study, they compared the weight of a regular day of garbage to that of a day when all the students were asked to be very aware about not wasting food and creating garbage for that specific day. The comparison was 7 lbs. of garbage on the regular day, compared to 1 lb. of garbage. The students are also very avid recyclers.
 
4. Changes to the 2013-14 School Calendar
The Board approved the new, revised Calendar for the 2013-14 school year, which the SHUSD Calendar Committee developed and was necessitated by updates in the SHTA Collective Bargaining Agreement. The new calendar may be found on the District website at the following link:

5. Board approved new Start and End times for the 2013-14 School Year
The Board approved new Start and End times for the 2013-14 school year. The three changes for 2013-14 are consistent Wednesday Early Release ending times for SHPS at 1:30 PM and SHES at 1:45 PM, and starting time at SHES will be changed to 8:35 AM.
 
6. Architect for new Auditorium approved by Board
The Board also approved the architect firm of Hibser Yamauchi to develop the design of the new Auditorium building at SHHS, which was made possible with funding from Measure C, approved by local voters last November. Hibser Yamauchi will be partnering with the architect firm of JBK Architects, a nationally recognized company, known for their expertise in designing auditoriums, who will assist in the design of the structure.
 
7. Dr. Cindy Toews re-ups for 3 more years
The Board approved a new 3-year contract between the District and Dr. Cindy Toews to remain the Assistant Superintendent at Saint Helena Unified. All Board members acknowledged the great job Dr. Toews has done in the past two years, and they are looking forward to more good things for St. Helena Unified in the coming years.
