Trustee Alex Shantz lives and grew up in Deer Park. He attended Robert Louis Stevenson Middle School and St. Helena High School before graduating through independent studies. He developed a passion for community engagement, grassroots advocacy and social change while attending Napa Valley College.

Shantz assisted in co-founding a grassroots alternative art non-profit called Wandering Rose. Wandering Rose provided a hub of resources, information, and advocacy for alternative arts and culture in the Napa Valley from 2001 to 2008.

Fiercely committed to ensuring student engagement in public policy, Shantz served as President of the Associated Students of Napa Valley College from 2010-2011 and Spring Semester in 2012. He also served on the Napa Valley College Board of Trustees as Student Trustee Spring semester 2014.

On May 14th, 2013 Shantz was appointed to the Napa County Gang and Youth Violence Commission as an At-Large Representative by the Napa County Board of Supervisors. He currently serves on the commission’s executive committee and was re-appointed July 22nd 2014.

“I have always been passionate about strengthening public education,” Shantz explained when asked why he wanted to join the school board. “Public education provided me a pathway to pursue higher education and the confidence to act to make a difference in the world.”

Shantz is deeply committed to ensuring everyone, especially those who are often overlooked in society, have a voice and are served by public institutions. Preparing all students to thrive in a global society involves embracing people of all races, ethnicities, cultures, national origins, ages, physical or mental ability, sexual orientation, gender, and gender identity or expression. He believes all students are capable of academic achievement and is passionate about closing the achievement gap for English learners and low income pupils.

Currently attending Sacramento State University, Shantz is majoring in Philosophy with a concentration in Ethics, Law, and Politics.
